AMD boosts performance with 1900+ Athlon XP

After cutting the price of its Athlon XP 1800+ processor last week, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) on Monday introduced the Athlon XP 1900+.

The new top performer in the Athlon XP family, which competes with Intel Corp.'s Pentium 4 series, costs US$269 when bought in 1,000-unit quantities, AMD said Monday.

The Athlon XP 1800+, now AMD's second best performer, was reduced from a bulk price of $252 to $223 exactly a week ago.

PCs with the new processor are available today from MicronPC Inc. and will also be sold by other PC makers, including Hewlett-Packard Co., Fujitsu Ltd. and Compaq Computer Corp., AMD said.

The 1900+ is the first addition to the Athlon XP family since its introduction on Oct. 9. The number in the chip's name refers to a performance index, instead of clock speed. The 1800+, for example, outperforms other processors that run at 1.8GHz, according to AMD.

Intel's fastest Pentium 4 runs at 2GHz and costs $401 when bought in 1,000-unit quantities.
