Getting closer to The Matrix: Japanese show 5-senses virtual reality system
Smells, touch and more added to VR environment
If you're a fan of science-fiction books that incorporate virtual reality-type of technology (Tad Williams "Otherland" series; Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash"), the concept of having virtual reality systems that incorporate all five senses is familiar. In the Otherland series, for example, characters use deprivation chamber-like tanks to fully experience the virtual world. Even the film "The Matrix" has this concept.
In the real world, we're getting closer and closer to this - check out this report from DigInfo News showcasing some Japanese technology that incorporates smells and motion controllers to the sights and sounds seen in regular VR:
