Borland to offer Net-based development service

Borland Software Corp. Tuesday announced TeamSource, an Internet-based service designed to allow geographically-dispersed software developers to build applications collaboratively online.

TeamSource will be previewed at Borland's annual developer conference, BorCon, to be held next week in Long Beach, California, and will be available in September of 2001. Pricing has not yet been determined.

Companies that sign up for the TeamSource service will be able to store code on servers hosted by a managed service provider (MSP) to be chosen by Borland. Thus, members of geographically-dispersed development teams will be able to access the code via the Internet and modify it, said Ben Riga, director of marketing for Borland.

TeamSource will also feature an instant messaging service that will allow users to store their instant-messaging conversations centrally on a server and make them available to the other members of the team, Riga said.

Borland soon will select the MSP that will oversee the service, according to Dwight Koop, vice president of operations. The company is looking for an MSP that can offer TeamSource on a global level. Although an MSP will handle the day-to-day operation of TeamSource, Borland will be monitoring the service through a network operations center.

TeamSource will also feature a host of security features, including user authentication, real-time monitoring of user behavior, tracking of code modification and intrusion detection, said Koop.
