NASA satellite fleet captures awesome images of May 1 solar explosion
Video combines different angles of big solar eruption
On May 1, NASA's fleet of Heliophysics satellites was able to capture some incredible imagery of a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun (aka solar flare). According to NASA, the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) "watched as an active region just around the left edge of the sun erupted with a huge cloud of solar material - a heated, charged gas called plasma."
In addition to the SDO images, NASA was able to get images from the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), and NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO). The agency's YouTube channel today published a video combining a bunch of the different images and video from the event to show how awesome it really was. They also added a cool musical soundtrack, which is always nice when watching these events.
