TATUNG SCIENCE AND Technology on Monday introduced its first server based on Sun Microsystems' recently released UltraSparc III 64-bit processor. The Tatung Compstation U280R/2750 is a rack-mounted server powered by two 750MHz Sun UltraSparc III chips and designed specifically for heavy computation in e-commerce and application server environments, according to officials at Tatung, in Fremont, Calif. Pricing starts at $19,800 for the standard configuration of 1GB of memory, 36GB of FC-AL (Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop) disk drives, and the two UltraSparc III chips. Tatung has been a manufacturer of Sun Solaris-compatible servers for nearly 10 years, according to Tatung officials.
