Late Wednesday, Twitter was battling a bug in its photo upload feature that had been causing trouble for hours.
Twitter first acknowledged the problem shortly before noon U.S. Eastern Time on its Twitter Support website and account.
After prematurely declaring the problem solved early in the afternoon, the company said around 4 p.m. that it was still dealing with the issue. As of 6 p.m., the problem remained outstanding.
Once notorious for its frequent outages and technical problems, Twitter has in recent years significantly improved its uptime and site performance.
The company, used by tens of millions of people around the world every day to publish short messages, share links and post photos, has become a valuable tool for companies not only to promote their wares but also to monitor consumers' perceptions.
With the latest version of its API (application programming interface), Twitter is making a deliberate attempt to promote the creation of third-party applications designed to help businesses make better use of the site and its content.
