Satellites to track penguin poop

By Amy Bennett  Add a new comment

Antarctica is enormous -- larger than the U.S. -- and nearly devoid of human beings. How, then, can scientists keep track of where penguin populations are? You'll be disgusted to learn that while the birds themselves are too small to see from space, their accumulated feces stain the ice and make their colonies visible via satellite.
