October 26, 2009, 8:11 AM — When it comes to the ideal spinning blades for a flying machine, "Nature has worked on this for millions of years and perfected it and it has optimal dynamic properties," says Darryll Pines, dean of the University of Maryland's Clark School of Engineering. "All we had to do was leverage that and put some propulsion on it." He was praising an invention from UM grad student Evan Ulrich, which included some other things Mother Nature left out, like a tiny camera.
