Pamela Jones has announced that she will be retiring original content this May 16 on the legal analysis site that grew to fame within and without the open source community as it rose to do battle with the incredibly audacious claims by The SCO Group.

Groklaw: Don't go home, go big

The time has come for Pamela Jones to seriously reevaluate the roles she and her team of Groklaw volunteers have within the free and open source community. Such a reevaluation should not end with the closure of the Groklaw web site, but a big change must indeed come.

Almost two years ago I wrote in this column that the SCO Group's future was all used up. Sorry to say, just like a cliche movie character, it has turned out that the SCO Group does not die easily. But the end may finally be getting closer with this week's jury ruling in favor of SCO Group adversary Novell.

Shame on me. I was sure that when SCO fired anti-Linux zealot and CEO Darl McBride, that Edward Cahn, the Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Court Trustee, would kill off SCO's IBM lawsuit as a waste of money for a company that's been bleeding red-ink for years. I was wrong.

At the beginning of its massive legal fight against Linux in 2003, The SCO Group Inc. imagined a day when companies like IBM, Novell Inc. and others would pay it large amounts of cash for alleged infringements on SCO-owned Unix code.
