Silicon Valley hardware company SeaMicro packs a lot of power

    Posted November 15, 2011 - 3:53 pm

SeaMicro is a small company that may still take the typical start-up foosball break, but it's at the leading edge of a trend that's bringing innovation back to the high-volume server market. It makes extremely dense, low-power servers.

Your Sales Management Software Should Always Be SaaS

    Posted September 16, 2009 - 11:58 am

Every small business sales team starts small, usually with the owner doing sales, often using spreadsheets to track prospect details. Companies like ACT! have made millions providing structure and organization to prospect and customer tracking. But today, I strongly recommend using a hosted sales management program for two reasons: cost and control.

Intel: Netbooks Not for First Time Buyers. Really?

    Posted July 30, 2009 - 12:51 pm

Intel went on the record with Reuters saying netbooks are not a good first computer in the article Intel Sees No First-Time PC Buyers for Netbooks. Why not? According to Intel's Sean Maloney, the first time you buy something, like a PC, you want the “real deal.” Does this make sense to you, or is this is subtle plea for buyers to stick with higher margin products like laptops and desktops?

    Netbook Specific Applications

    Posted July 27, 2009 - 2:22 pm

We know a netbook is not a laptop, but when they debuted, the only applications available were the regular Windows and Linux applications. Now companies are taking into account the smaller screen size and lower power of netbooks and releasing applications modified to maximize your minimal netbook.

Open Source + Amazon Storage = Less Backup Cost

    Posted February 17, 2009 - 2:32 pm

Let's be honest: half of the companies reading this today are NOT backing up their data properly. That's the optimistic figure, because some backup industry analysts say about two-thirds of companies have backup issues that cause them grief. But there's hope for the unprepared half or two-thirds of you out there.

    It's Not Your &#%*@$ Computer!

    Posted February 11, 2009 - 1:21 pm

If the company provides the computer, the company owns the computer and has the sole right to decide how the employee uses that computer and what software can be loaded. Locking down Windows-based systems stop a wide variety of security problems.

Remove PC User Rights, Reduce Windows Bugs

    Posted February 5, 2009 - 1:13 pm

When Windows users sign on as a user, not Administrator, your security improves greatly. Remember the company, not the user, owns the computer and decides how it's used.

VoIP Now Voice Over Internet Plumbing

    Posted January 9, 2009 - 2:51 pm

I've never liked the acronym VoIP because it sounds so stupid out loud (vo-eep). But alas, the world yet again ignored my suggestions. Now I will try to recast the acronym to at least mean something much closer to the perception of many in the VoIP business: VoIP is now just phones over different plumbing, and no longer a Big Deal.

    Twitter and CNN Crawls

    Posted December 26, 2008 - 1:20 pm

If you watch CNN, you may have noticed some of the shows now include comments by viewers in the crawl section at the bottom of the screen. People send those messages via Twitter. Is this a brilliant tool for viewer engagement or the equivalent of drunks waving in the background when an athlete is interviewed immediately after a game?

Vista OOBE Part 3: Networking Problem with Some Routers

    Posted December 17, 2008 - 2:07 pm

Now that my sound function works, and I vented about the User Access Control, let's get to a serious problem: networking. If you've never heard the phrase “DHCP Broadcast Flag” before, you're in good company. DCHP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) is the rock-solid protocol that assigns IP addresses to devices as they connect to the network. I say rock-solid, but that's before Microsoft's bizarre configuration change turned DHPC into a source of incredible frustration. I've been fighting networks for over two decades and never, ever had to worry about DHCP before, but that was before Microsoft's incompetence with Vista.

Can Endicia Make the Post Office Palatable?

    Posted November 25, 2008 - 11:57 am

Small businesses tend to forget about the US Post Office for shipping once they get past a handful of packages per week. And if you deal with the Post Office as a consumer, or your particular Post Office treats consumers like annoyances, you run happily to FedEx or UPS and never look back. So I was surprised to hear from a company called Endicia that can make the Post Office a viable shipping option for businesses, including services like volume rebates, flat rate shipping, and Saturday delivery for no extra charge.

40 Trillion Spam E-mails This Year
