March 16, 2012, 1:59 PM — Since I spend most of my days in front of a laptop, I'm usually right on top of the stupid trends sweeping the Internet. But somehow this one eluded me.
It turns out that the Internet has spawned another fun competitive activity -- and this one's even dumber than planking (if you can believe that).
It's called the "Cinnamon Challenge," and the goal of the "game" is to swallow a spoonful of the powered spice without dying -- I mean, without water.
The Cinnamon Challenge has been around since 2001, according to Wikipedia. But apparently it's undergoing a renaissance, in large part because of
an explosion of idiots lacking common sense and desperate for attention YouTube.
Here's the Wall Street Journal on the latest evidence that Fear Factor will never run out of shameless contestants:
Some 30,000 videos tagged "cinnamon challenge" have been uploaded on to YouTube. The most popular, with almost nine million views, was uploaded last month; it shows a woman with big earrings slurping a pile of brown powder from a soup ladle and immediately, dramatically, spitting it out. A fit of coughing follows.
Now that's quality entertainment!
See, people, the thing is this: Shoving a spoonful of cinnamon into your mouth can be risky business. It's potentially dangerous, especially to people with respiratory problems.
"It is an obvious choking hazard and there is a risk of inhaling the dust," the WSJ quotes a spokesman for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. "This certainly is not advisable."
In addition to its presence on YouTube, the Cinnamon Challenge also has been sweeping Twitter of late, proving that poor judgment is a cross-platform phenomenon.
How long before we start seeing tweets from people declaring themselves Foursquare mayor of the Cinnamon Challenge?
