Three apps for listening to streaming radio on your iOS device

By Kirk McElhearn, Macworld |  Software, IOS

iTunes gives you the ability to access thousands of free streaming Internet radio stations from around the world. But what about if you want to spin the virtual radio dial on an iOS device as well? You may have found some great Internet radio stations that play just the right type of music for work or play and want to access them on the go. Or you may have a favorite radio station for news, talk, or music thats streamed over the Internet. Luckily, you can replicate some of what iTunes offers on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with some third-party apps.

For starters, there are iOS apps for services like Last.fm ( Macworld rated 3 out of 5 mice ), Pandora Radio ( Macworld rated 3.5 out of 5 mice ), Sirius XM, and Slacker Radio ( Macworld rated 4 out of 5 mice ), offering each of those services content, either paid or free. (You may or may not have mobile access in your subscription with some of the above.)

1. Shoutcast offers 54,000-plus radio stations, and you can access them with the free Shoutcast Radio iOS app. This app is easy to navigate, but has minimal features. You can view what youre listening to, if the station provides this information, but theres no album art or lyrics.

The Featured screen has ten promoted stations, but in my tests they didnt always work. Searching is quick and responsive, and the search results show the bit rate of each station. You can also save stations as favorites, so you can access them whenever you want.

2. The $1 Internet RadioBox app gives you access to all of Shoutcasts stations, as well as those from the RadioDeck and IceCast directories. (For IceCast, you have to view a webpage, which isnt very easy to do on an iPhone.) The RadioDeck directory is interesting because it lists stations by country; if you want to listen to content from a specific country or in a specific language, its easy to find it here.
