October 30, 2012, 6:26 PM — Hurricane Sandy continued to punish the East Coast Tuesday with fierce winds, torrential downpours and massive flooding, leaving dozens of people dead, thousands homeless, millions without power and damage to the U.S. economy estimated to be up to $20 billion.
With the presidential election scheduled just seven days from now, partisan operatives and commentators are lining up to hurl accusations that the "Frankenstorm" is being politicized by the other side.
But charges of politicizing the hurricane after the fact are but a sprinkling of rainfall compared to a theory making the rounds of the nutty conspiracy world.
According to the tinfoil-hat wearers, the White House used an ionospheric research project called High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) to manipulate the storm so it would cause unprecedented damage, allowing Obama to either:
* win the election by looking "presidential" during a disaster
* postpone the election
* declare martial law
This is reminiscent of when President Clinton used the Y2K at the end of 2000 to cancel the election, extend his presidency and impose martial law. Those were dark days for our country.
Of course, one wonders if all this HAARP hurricane manipulation would have been necessary had Obama simply showed up for the first presidential debate in Denver instead of sending a wax figure from Madame Tussauds, thus blowing a comfortable lead over Mitt Romney in the polls.
Then again, defeating an opponent straight-up on Election Day can't be nearly as thrilling as deploying a super-secret government program to control the weather. After all, any mortal can win an election; it takes a god-like figure to move the heavens.
Just look at what you can do behind the wheel of HAARP, according to Wikipedia:
[T]he project has been blamed for triggering catastrophes such as floods, droughts, hurricanes, thunderstorms, and devastating earthquakes in Pakistan and the Philippines, major power outages, the downing of TWA Flight 800, Gulf War syndrome, and chronic fatigue syndrome.
The good news is that HAARP puts us on a more level playing field with these aliens and their tsunami-creating machine. So at least there's that upside.
