If there's any company that's going to have a field day with Microsoft's controversial new Windows 8, it's Stardock. Case in point: Start8, a free beta program the company markets that replaces the "missing" Start Menu on the Windows 8 explorer desktop taskbar.

Windows 8 first impressions for CIOs and IT pros

    Posted October 10, 2012 - 10:36 am

Microsoft's new operating system has received mixed early reviews. Get past the missing Start menu and the 'ribbonized' File Explorer, though, and you'll likely find a faster OS that should make workers more productive -- especially if you give them new Windows 8 tablets.

    Review: Miso for iOS

    Posted October 6, 2012 - 7:40 am

If you find yourself bored while watching TV, add some spice to your viewing by making a game of it. Miso brings competition to social TV through points. It also offers extra content for some shows. And while you get some social features on all iOS devices, the app only offers its full complement of tools for iPhone and iPod touch users running iOS 3.2 or later.

Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 review: Powerful--and power hungry, too

    Posted October 6, 2012 - 7:37 am

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 delivers serious power at a price that won't break the bank. On the other hand, it might break your back, weighing a hefty 6.2 pounds (not including accessories). But for comfort-be-damned power users, the Y580 will be well worth its $1099 price.

    Review: GetGlue for iPad

    Posted October 6, 2012 - 7:30 am

GetGlue started as Foursquare-style check-in app for TV--you could let others know what you're watching and get awards for your show check-ins--but the recently updated iPad app (which is compatible with any iPad running iOS 5.0 or later) adds more ways to interact and discover new shows. Although the interface could be more intuitive, these new features work well, and its large user community makes GetGlue the most engaging of the social TV apps available now.

Review: TV Guide Mobile for iOS

    Posted October 6, 2012 - 7:20 am

TV Guidehas earned cred in television listings--the company has produced a printed guide of TV show listings since 1953. However, the way we watch TV has changed quite a bit since then, and the app that bears the company's name attempts to keep up with the times. If you like a traditional list-type guide to find what's on, TV Guide's free app is a solid choice. The app makes it easy to find what's new and if streaming versions are available, though its social features lack in comparison to other TV companion options.

    Review: BuddyTV for iOS

    Posted October 6, 2012 - 7:15 am

BuddyTVstarted as a website that let users comment on their favorite shows. Then the company made this model more mobile with its iOS app and added some tempting features, like integrating a remote for some DVRs. Unfortunately, the flaws in the current version of the app overshadow any advantages BuddyTV offers.

Digital Storm Aventum review: Impressive build, but misses the target

    Posted October 6, 2012 - 7:13 am

On paper, Digital Storm's Aventum desktop looks as if it should smoke anything you throw at it. Seen in person, the chassis of this obscenely large and backbreakingly heavy PC looks more like a white version of the monolith from Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey than a desktop computer. In fact, we urge you to not put this one on any desk that you haven't structurally reinforced.

Xpadder: Play PC games with a game controller instead of a keyboard

    Posted October 3, 2012 - 12:10 pm

Many casual Web or Flash games would do well to implement gamepad controls. Platformers and bullet-hell titles are a perfect example. Sure, you can get by with WASD and the space bar, but it's not 1992 anymore. You shouldn't be forced to just get by when you've got that shiny, $60 wireless gamepad sitting two feet away. The answer here is a program called Xpadder ($10).

Although many utilities to tweak graphics cards exist, AMD's OverDrive is an especially good choice for AMD-based systems.

    DOSBox: Free, open-source DOS emulation

    Posted September 29, 2012 - 7:25 am

Running games during the DOS era was trouble enough, and today exploring those old games can be a nightmare. Sound card issues, memory management and other peculiarities of early PC gaming amplified as OS technology progressed and passed these titles by, leaving many of them orphaned and unable to run on modern systems. Today's answer to this problem isn't digging up an old system or rooting around for special drivers, it's emulation: free and open-source DOSBox.
