Sonya Christian is the Chief Information Officer at West Georgia Health, a not-for-profit community hospital located in LaGrange, Georgia, about an hour south of Atlanta. West Georgia Health is the first non-Magic site to go-live with Meditech 6.0.
As CIO, Sonya has championed the consistent use of change management at West Georgia Health and has led the adoption of Information Services standards in the organization.
Under her leadership, West Georgia Health has implemented the ED management application, electronic nursing documentation, Voice-over IP phone system, Cardiology PACS, OR Management, Scanning and Archiving and Computerized Provider Order Entry. In addition to her lead-role in implementing Meditech within the hospital, Sonya also spearheaded the Meditech installation of practice management and ambulatory electronic health records in both hospital-owned and independent physician practices in LaGrange.
Before her career at West Georgia Health, Sonya was CIO at Slidell Memorial Hospital in Slidell, Louisiana for four years. While there, she launched the installation of a new Voice-over IP phone system, a new gigabit Ethernet network, new surgery and lab systems, a second-generation PACS, and led the vendor selection process for a new Health Information System. In addition, Sonya served as administrator over Health Information Management and Transcription, leading the HIM department to reduce their medical records delinquency from a high of 239 % post-Hurricane Katrina to less than 15 % well within the Joint Commission parameters. Sonya also played a pivotal role at Slidell during Hurricane Katrina serving as one of the incident commanders during the hurricane and immediately following.
Prior to Slidell, Sonya served as Information Technology Services manager at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois, leading information system projects for materials management, surgery, dietary, medical records, the business office and hospital-owned as well as independent physician practices. She also served on the task force to reduce AR days at Methodist.
A graduate of Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama, Sonya earned her bachelor’s of Business Administration degree, graduating with high honors. She earned her master’s of Business Administration degree from the University of Phoenix with honors.
Sonya is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the College of Health Information Management Executives, the Health Information System Society, Georgia HIMSS and the Technology Association of Georgia.
Sonya is a CIO Executive Council member.
