Non-geeks prefer solid-state drives to cloud

High cost and a reputation for flakiness limited sales of SSD flash drives as alternatives to hard drives. Cost and flakiness are still a little high, but both are dropping, making SSDs waaaay sexier to consumers than cloud or virtual storage, no matter what geeks think about it.

Here’s one of those facts that is somehow both reassuring and disheartening in equal amounts: no matter how perfectly you treat your phone or tablet, you only get three or four years until it’s functionally useless without a charging cord nearby.

Both Dropbox and Skydrive rolled out new features yesterday. Coincidence, or are they just trying to keep attention away from all the "Google Drive" rumors? Also, ZumoDrive is shutting down, so back up your files!

All chips with 16 cores or more must be 'network on a chip:' MIT researcher

MIT researcher Li-Shiuan Peh will present a paper in June with results showing best designs for mini networks that must replace data buses with data packets and tiny routers on each core for chips with more than 16 cores. Networky chips could scale to hundreds of cores, Peh said.

Seagate becomes densest commercial hard drive maker

Seagate just made a major breakthrough on a heating technique invented in the 50s to make hard drives 50 times more space-efficient than they are now. Unfortunately, after working on it for a decade, Seagate's version will still probably lose out to alternatives still being invented.

Why is IT so bad at cloud computing?

It's no secret IT is ambivalent about cloud computing's potential to steal jobs and user loyalty. That's no excuse for sloppy security negligence of apps in the cloud. That attitude doesn't come from hostility; it comes from overwork and the desperate wish that something new could happen without incremental additions to every headache IT ever had and never cured.

MegaUpload takedown didn't slow pirate downloads, just moved them offshore

Between 30 percent and 40 percent of all file-sharing traffic went through MegaUploads until it was shut down. Since then the number of files being downloaded has remained steady, but from different sites, many of which use data centers in the EU or Asia rather than the U.S.

Hacktivist collective Anonymous launched a massive series of DDOS attacks on the DoJ, RIAA, MPAA and other supporters of SOPA and PIPA in retaliation for a raid that shut down popular download site Megaupload and indictments for its execs for content piracy and conspiracy.

IBM breakthrough could lead to data storage media 100 times more dense than now

IBM's Almaden Research Center figured out a way to store a data bit on 12 atoms rather than a million. Lining up individual atoms at close to absolute zero is so difficult and expensive it makes more sense to just keep using the new material for quantum research for now.

Virus attack gets convicted murderer a new trial

A stenographer who ignored the belt-and-suspenders policy of transcribing trials on both paper and disk was fired after a virus destroyed data on her computer, destroying the only transcript of a murder conviction, which was thrown out by appellate court that had no record to consider.

Arctic-Circle Facebook data center to save environment, doom Santa

After two years of pressure from Greenpeace to make its data centers cleaner and more energy efficient, Facebook agreed to build its next one at the edge of the Arctic Circle, where cold air can cool servers and renewable energy can drive them. Santa was unavailable for comment.

NASA is really good at long-term, complex, expensive technology projects. It's also a scientific organization that loans out the samples it collects to scientists studying the moon, comets and other sources. Unfortunately, NASA isn't that good at getting them all back.
