  • Question

What happens if I don’t properly eject an SD card before removing it?

    Posted July 17, 2014 - 3:18 am

I don’t always go through the steps to properly eject SD cards from computers at work before I remove them. I usually use a USB reader, but on some laptops with an SD card slot, I just use that. Just to be clear, I’m not doing this every time or even on purpose - I just forget occasionally.

Can I record straight from TV on a USB 3.0 instead of USB 2.0

    Posted April 18, 2014 - 6:57 pm

I sometimes record a TV program using a USB 2.0 in spite of the obvious drawbacks, such as a 4GB USB will not fit much over an hour of Standard Definition, and Full HD is just not worth it unless you have a proper Hard Drive recorder, as a movie wouldn't fit on a 16GB USB 2.0 if is inFull HD.

SanDisk announced a 128GB microSD card - what devices can use it?

    Posted February 25, 2014 - 1:13 am

SanDisk has released a 128GB microSD card, which is pretty impressive to me since I can remember when there were 128MB cards. My concern is what can use them? Both my tablet and phone say they will support up to 64GB microSD cards - am I out of luck or can I still use the new 128GB cards?

How to recover data on a failed SSD?

I know it is often possible to recover data from a failed HDD, but what about a SSD? If it fails, can data be recovered or are you out of luck?
  • Question

How can Blu-Ray discs store so much more data than a DVD that is exactly the same size?

    Posted February 3, 2014 - 12:56 pm

Blu-Ray disks can store about five time the amount of data that a DVD can store (5GB vs 25GB for a single layer disc), while visually appearing practically identical. I thought it might be layers, but that doesn’t seem to be it, since you have dual and single layer discs in either format.

How to tell if SD card is good?

    Posted December 30, 2013 - 4:15 pm

I realize that SD cards only have a finite number of read/write cycles, but is there any way to tell how much degradation has occurred? They have gotten so cheap that I don’t mind copying the data and replacing the SD cards occasionally, but they aren’t so cheap that I want to do that every X months.
  • Question

Why not use SD Cards instead of external hard drive for additional storage?

    Posted December 23, 2013 - 5:42 pm

Is there any reason not to use an SD card for additional laptop storage instead of an external HDD? They are smaller, have no moving parts, and I have them laying all over the place so they are essentially “free.” I rarely use the SD card slot on my laptop, so I could just leave it the laptop in all the time.
  • Question

How fast is data transfer with San Disk’s Connect Wireless Flash Drive?

    Posted November 7, 2013 - 4:41 pm

How quickly can data be transferred between the device and the drive? It sounds like a good idea, but I would hate for it to be like downloading a large file over a slow internet connection.

How to repair a damaged DVD-R disc?

    Posted July 23, 2013 - 5:14 pm

I have a DVD-R that has (had) some old client files stored on it, but it looks as if someone used it for a frisbee. With their dog. So now it is heavily scratched, and I get a disc read error when I try to access the data. Are there any cleaning or buffing methods that actually work?
  • Question

Will HPs practice of installing backdoors in StoreVirtual Storage products harm sales?

    Posted July 15, 2013 - 8:19 pm

HP’s practice of putting hidden admin accounts in it’s enterprise products that allow users to gain root access seems like a bad idea to me. The company says, essentially, don’t worry about it, even with root access gained, the data is not accessible. Maybe not, but how much mayhem could be caused? I’m thinking plenty.
  • Question

How can I recover data from a damaged SD card?

    Posted July 12, 2013 - 12:31 pm

I have an SD card that stopped being recognized. I tried it on 2 different laptops to make sure it wasn’t a problem with the card reader. The card isn’t obviously damaged, but I can’t see or access the contents. Is there a way to try to get the data that was on the card?
  • Question

How much space should be kept free on hard drives?

    Posted June 14, 2013 - 5:40 pm

I’ve heard people say that a wide range of space should be left free on a hard drive for best performance - anywhere from 5%, which seems too low, to 50%, which seems too high. So if I have a 2 TB drive, there should be 1 TB of free space? Riiiiiiiight. Is there actually a rule of thumb to follow on this?

Best drive for NAS or SAN?

    Posted August 22, 2011 - 11:47 am

I was under the belief that the best drive to install in a RAID was a faster, reliable drive - which is why 10,000rpm SCSI was so popular. But now I'm finding articles which recommend using slower drives when a bundle of them are to be installed into a NAS or SAN, due to issues with heat dissipation and drive longevity.
