Free Game Friday: Love the line

    Posted September 20, 2013 - 6:40 am

Lines, man. Those thin little one-dimensional shapes make up our entire world. Written languages, architecture, art and math are just a few examples of what wouldn't exist without them. It's time they get a chance to shine in the free-to-play flash game world, and I'm here to give it to 'em.

Free game Friday: More good games about the bad guy

    Posted January 4, 2013 - 8:55 am

Since even indie devs take time off for the holidays, there weren't a lot of new games this week. Luckily, this month's Ludum Dare about villainy produced enough games for two weeks of great games.

    Posted December 17, 2012 - 5:00 pm

Office productivity plummets during the holidays. Many people take extended vacations, and some businesses just plain shut down. And the employees who actually show up to work? They while away the hours playing casual games on their workstation web browsers.

    Free game Friday: Text-based games

    Posted October 12, 2012 - 7:04 am

In honor of the 2012 Interactive Fiction contest we'll be featuring text-based games in this week's Free Game Friday roundup. Not all of this week's games come from the competition, but they all feature the written word as their main gameplay mechanic. We also didn't have space to feature all the great games in the competition, so here's a list of all the web playable games in the competition if you need more interactive fiction. Text-based games are having a real renaissance right now, and the quality of interactive fiction has never been better.

The gamer's guide to the iPad

    Posted March 18, 2012 - 7:48 am

Apple's OSX isn't exactly a gamer's paradise. But the same can't be said about iOS--especially when it comes to the iPad. In some ways the iPad is the perfect gaming handheld: It has great battery life, and games are cheap. But before you run out to give Apple all of your money, there are a few things you should know before using the iPad as a gaming device.

Mario and Zelda: My 25-year love affair

If you haven't played Nintendo's Mario and Zelda since you were a kid because of silly adult obligations like work and family, it's time to do yourself a favor and pick up the new games for the 3DS and Wii.

    X-Men for iPhone and iPad

    Posted July 9, 2011 - 6:39 am

I approach iOS-ified versions of classic arcade and console games with a healthy mixture of anticipation and trepidation. On the one hand, it's nice to see all those games I wasted all those hours playing in my misspent youth making an appearance in my slightly less misspent adulthood. On the other hand, the graphics and gameplay of two or three decades ago doesn't always translate well to Apple's state-of-the-art handhelds.

Didn't like the ending to Back to the Future 3? Well then you might like Back to the Future: Episode 1 from Telltale Games, as it rewrites the history of the franchise to provide room for the further adventures of Marty and Doc Brown. Power up the flux capacitor, it's time to journey into the past once again.

Stupid Zombies for iPhone and iPad

    Posted February 11, 2011 - 12:28 pm

I only recently reviewed Capcom's iOS port of Dead Rising, and here I am with yet another game starring the undead, albeit a very different one. In a game market that has been bombarded with all kinds of zombie-themed action, Stupid Zombies by GameResort is a straightforward, clean, and--dare I say it--adorable puzzle game for the iOS.

"You are the controller." It sounds so simple, so friendly, so patently cool. Act naturally, in other words, and for the most part, Kinect can tell what you're up to. The trouble is, sometimes it can't.

My account was activated Friday night, giving me a whole weekend to test the service. I've been highly skeptical of OnLive since it was first announced. It might be time for me to eat my words...

SoupToys Toybox Turns Desktop Into Playground

    Posted June 7, 2010 - 12:51 pm

One word for SoupToys Toybox is "amusing." Another way to describe it is "something that'll eat up a lot of time if you're not careful, and that's a good thing." SoupToys Toybox (free) places a box full of basketballs, tennis balls, tiny rubber balls, a roller skate, a basketball hoop, and other objects, on your desktop. It gives these objects cartoony physics and lets you go nuts with them. It even keeps score when something manages to clear the basket. The roller skate, especially, is amusing because of how it gets knocked over when a basketball is tossed at it.
