Opera 12: a work in progress finally shows real improvements

    Posted July 14, 2012 - 7:45 am

If Opera 11.5 ( Macworld rated 3 out of 5 mice ) was a browser that wanted to be an operating system, Opera 12 happily seems to abandon that dream. This free, open-source browser’s designers are shedding the nifty but pointless bells and whistles that made previous versions so charmingly eccentric and overstuffed. In their place, Opera 12 takes a respectable stab at assembling a finely focused modern browser.

Chrome for iOS nearly worthy of default browser status

    Posted July 14, 2012 - 7:11 am

Google's Chrome browser for iOS is well made and a pleasure to use, particularly if you're deeply entrenched in Google's ecosystem. But owing to a few unfortunate limitations--many of them outside of Google's control--it's tough to recommend that anyone rely on Chrome as their main iOS Web browser.

    Google's Chrome 2.0 Is Underwhelming

    Posted May 25, 2009 - 8:22 pm

Google's upgrade of Chrome to 2.0 is exceedingly underwhelming --- there's so little new that if you blinked you'd miss the changes. It's baffling that a company that keeps fully featured software like Gmail in beta for years has jumped to 2.0 for a browser with so little to offer.

My New Web Browser...Thank You, Google!

One tiny but important aspect of my day job is to review new and/or popular versions of web browsers to make sure my company's web-based applications function properly. So I downloaded the beta of Chrome today. After approximately 15 minutes of use, I made Chrome my default browser. It really is that good.

    Google Chrome Web browser

    Posted September 3, 2008 - 3:08 pm

Google takes aim squarely at Microsoft with the release of its new Web browser, Chrome. And Microsoft should be very afraid: Chrome lives up to its hype by rethinking the Web browser in clever and convenient ways that make using the Web a more organic experience than you'd get with either Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 or Mozilla's Firefox 3.

Google Chrome vs. Internet Explorer 8

    Posted September 3, 2008 - 2:34 pm

They're back! Just when you thought the "browser wars" were over, with the two camps -- Microsoft and Mozilla.org -- settling in for a kind of intransigent détente, along comes Google to stir things up all over again. Clearly Google is unhappy with the current state of browser geopolitics and feels it needs to roll its own in order to ensure a robust base for its myriad hosted applications (e.g. Gmail, Google Docs, etc.)
