Cool gifts for geeks, 2011: Computer, notebook and tablet tech treasures

    Posted November 26, 2011 - 9:50 am

We’ve always had a category covering the world of computers in our Cool Yule Tools holiday gift guide. But then computers gave way to notebooks (so we combined the category), and then tablets have entered the scene. With the arrival and success of the iPad and other tablets, many have said that “the PC is dead”, and we’ll admit, our choices of cool computers are fewer than in years past. But there are still some nice systems out there, here are a bunch of desktops, notebooks, and yes, tablets, that we think would make for some good gifts:

Review: Acer Aspire 8950G aspires to greatness

    Posted June 7, 2011 - 9:17 pm

When I first hauled out the Acer Aspire 8950G from the backpack, I almost dropped it--not because it was that heavy, but because it was lighter than expected. This massive (I hesitate to say "notebook") desktop replacement system sports an 18.4-inch, true 1080p LCD panel. At 8 pounds, 5 ounces without the power brick, it's lighter than some smaller systems that have been through the lab here. Even with the 120-watt power supply, the weight falls just a little short of 10 pounds.

    Posted March 21, 2011 - 12:11 pm

Let's get this out of the way first thing: Apple's new MacBook Pro line of laptops, unveiled late last month and almost lost in the din of publicity around the iPad 2 launch, do not -- repeat, do not -- use flawed Sandy Bridge processors.

    Lenovo's IdeaPad U260: Unexpected style

    Posted January 24, 2011 - 2:03 pm

Despite a pedigree of ominous-looking, utilitarian forerunners and a name that conjures up memories of a bad Matthew McConaughey WWII submarine movie, Lenovo's IdeaPad U260 takes the company's laptops somewhere they've never been before--the queue for this year's style and design awards.

Review: Dell Inspiron 14 (model 1464)

    Posted May 6, 2010 - 1:31 pm

The chips inside the Dell Inspiron 14 (1464) should push this average laptop beyond midrange quality. A 2.13GHz Intel Core i3-330M processor and 4GB of RAM should power any typical home or office workload. A decent, 14-inch display gives room to edit side-by-side documents or to watch videos. Why, then, does the Inspiron 14 end up feeling more low-end in actual use?

Intel Corp.'s new Core i7 family of processors includes the company's most advanced mobile chips. First introduced in September 2009, the design was revamped this January. The latest version of the mobile Core i7, called Arrandale during its development, is built on a 32-nanometer fabrication process and offers base speeds that range from 1.06 GHz to 2.66 GHz.
