    Posted February 4, 2012 - 7:19 am

It sounds like Asus wants to cash in on Microsoft's recently announced Kinect for Windows setup -- the company roll out actual laptops that include Microsoft's motion-sensing technology built in. Why is anyone's guess, of course: Do you really want to wave your hands, arms (or legs, don't forget) around in front of your laptop?

Cool gifts for geeks, 2011: Computer, notebook and tablet tech treasures

    Posted November 26, 2011 - 8:50 am

We’ve always had a category covering the world of computers in our Cool Yule Tools holiday gift guide. But then computers gave way to notebooks (so we combined the category), and then tablets have entered the scene. With the arrival and success of the iPad and other tablets, many have said that “the PC is dead”, and we’ll admit, our choices of cool computers are fewer than in years past. But there are still some nice systems out there, here are a bunch of desktops, notebooks, and yes, tablets, that we think would make for some good gifts:
  • Buy an HP Laptop at Wal-Mart, Get a TouchPad for $149

    Posted November 8, 2011 - 6:00 am

The comeback continues, with Wal-Mart joining Best Buy in offering the hot tablet with purchase of a qualifying laptop. If you’re a developer, HP will let you pick up two of those 32GB TouchPads for $150 each.

  • MacBook Air: Speculation increases as inventories dwindle

    Posted June 27, 2011 - 8:47 am

Online retailers are showing signs that a MacBook Air refresh may be imminent. Best Buy recently stopped shipping all four models of the latest Air lineup through its online store. Shoppers looking for Apple's ultraportable laptop from Best Buy will have to pick it up at the big box chain's physical locations instead. There are also reports of constrained MacBook Air inventories in some of Amazon's international stores (although not the U.S. store), according to 9-to-5 Mac.

These items usually sell for inaccessible prices but now he's gone into something much closer to mass production -- or at least multiple production on his Steampunk Laptop. And you can get one for just $5,500.

Review: Acer Aspire 8950G aspires to greatness

    Posted June 7, 2011 - 8:17 pm

When I first hauled out the Acer Aspire 8950G from the backpack, I almost dropped it--not because it was that heavy, but because it was lighter than expected. This massive (I hesitate to say "notebook") desktop replacement system sports an 18.4-inch, true 1080p LCD panel. At 8 pounds, 5 ounces without the power brick, it's lighter than some smaller systems that have been through the lab here. Even with the 120-watt power supply, the weight falls just a little short of 10 pounds.

The battery on my Asus U6S laptop is just over three years old. Unsurprisingly, it can barely hold a charge anymore, in part because the person who used it most (I'm looking at you, Mrs. Hassle-Free PC) kept it plugged in all the time. As I've mentioned in the past, that's a surefire way to reduce a battery's longevity and capacity.

It’s spring again, and with the new season comes the age-old ritual of cleaning out things you ignored for most of the year. Far be it from me to suggest that you clean out your basement, garage, or attic, but I would be remiss if I didn’t recommend you take a closer look at the crusty corners of your Mac. Last year, Chris Breen shared valuable Tips for a tidier Mac—all of which are worth revisiting. But I also want to draw your attention to a half-dozen digital dust bunnies that you might not have considered:
