Consumerization of IT

Will enterprise embrace Google Glass when it sees a general release? It’s the kind of thing that I could see a few people I know wanting their companies to support, but I can’t think of many (if any) needs it fills for businesses. Is there even any effort to penetrate the business market with Glass?

It certainly appears that BYOD is here to stay. Has anyone figured out the impact from a financial perspective? Does it actually cost a business money to embrace BYOD, or does it save money?

My first thought at seeing the new $799 128GB iPad was, that it was a catch up model to keep its specs competitive with the $999 Surface Pro 128GB. Now, I'm not so sure that the Surface needs to catch up to the 128GB iPad after learning that Windows 8 takes up 45GB of the Surface Pro's storage.

BB 10 is almost here - finally. I haven't got my hands on one yet personally, but from what I've seen they actually look like pretty devices. It looks like all the major carriers in the US are going to support BB 10, so they are still in the game. The question I have is whether business will continue to support BB.

I think of CES as being my shopping list for next Christmas. I saw a sweet WiFi enabled clothes dryer, honey! Kidding....kind of. Actually, I saw some interesting new software from Synology for their NAS devices (DSM 4.2 beta) that emphasize cloud based management and includes Synology High Availability on their NAS devices.

BYOD has been a growing trend, and as many of us know, a part of that trend that is not so awesome is making all of the devices that come through the door work with our MDM tools. I got an email about Samsung having a program that certifies that it's devices are SAFE, which is a "clever" acronym for Samsung Approved For Enterprise.

A significant and growing amount of IT's time is spent on BYOD support. The more liberal (and popular) the BYOD policy as to what devices are supported/allowed, the more time we've had to devote to support. Much of the time it sounds like an episode of The IT Crowd where problems have to be addressed for people.
