Mobile hardware is selling so fast it's overtaking PCs as the computing platform of choice, which is more convenient for users, but will fracture the OS and PC markets.
  • XP takes baby step into the abyss

    Posted October 22, 2010 - 7:04 am

Much maligned by the creator that wished we'd all buy its new favorite, Windows XP served loyally through three major versions and the 'upgrade' to Vista, far longer than anyone expected.

  • Hot Rod Netbook Sports Dual CPUs

    Posted October 21, 2009 - 12:04 pm

Leave it to that computer innovation center Columbia (the country, not the university) to come up with a way to turbo charge the lowly netbook into near-laptop performance. Haleron in Columbia spent six months engineering a netbook with two Intel Atom processors to rev up the performance. The lower netbook pricing enables income-limited South Americans to use a netbook in place of a more expensive laptop for general computer needs.
  • Is Microsoft abandoning XP security updates?

    Posted September 10, 2009 - 4:00 pm

Microsoft really, really wants people to buy Windows 7, so it has long tried to retire XP. Now it appears Microsoft will no longer be releasing some security patches for XP. Coincidence?
  • Upgrading to Windows 7: Four Cheers, Four Jeers

    Posted August 4, 2009 - 10:50 am

On one hand, it's far too early to worry about how much Windows 7 you should add into your small business. On the other hand, ComputerWorld's Windows 7: Four Reasons to Upgrade, Four Reasons to Stay Away article does a better job than most in laying out your probable pain points in an upgrade.

  • Netbook Vendor Shakeup Coming?

    Posted June 8, 2009 - 6:57 pm

We cheered netbooks when they appeared two years ago, and many vendors jumped into that market. But is Two Years On, Netbooks on Verge of a Big Shake-Up really true? I'm afraid it may be, and we can only blame the vendors themselves for poorly managing their newly created market segment.

  • Windows 7's XP Mode is CYA at its best

    Posted April 27, 2009 - 11:48 pm

Microsoft has been lambasted in the media for Windows Vista and is doing everything possible to make sure that Windows 7 doesn't meet a similar fate. With application compatibility remaining an area of weakness for Vista, Microsoft has taken the step of announcing their development of a virtual XP Mode that will run in Windows 7 and host Windows XP-compatible software. While XP Mode presents some challenges for IT staff, it also present a terrific opportunity for Microsoft.

  • Ubuntu Faster Than Windows XP Feedback

    Posted January 19, 2009 - 1:21 pm

Last Thursday I reported Ubuntu Faster on My Internet than Windows XP, and the post got posted on Slashdot. If you don't know Slashdot.com, it's the self-proclaimed “news for nerds” site that generates a ton of traffic. Getting mentioned on SlashDot is like seeing your story become a pinata and watching everyone grab a stick and start swinging at your story. Unlike with real pinatas, the stick wielders try and hit you, too. People who take it seriously get their feelings hurt. I just laugh and watch the uproar for what it really is: a circus.

  • Ubuntu Faster on My Internet Than Windows XP

    Posted January 15, 2009 - 2:27 pm

This isn't a rigorous benchmarked lab test yet, but I found something bizarre this morning. After fixing a little router problem, I tested the download speeds on my DSL line from AT&T and my cable Internet line from Time Warner Cable. I have both for product testing needs.
  • The end is near -- again

    Posted June 19, 2008 - 10:39 am

Well, here we go again. And this time it looks final. Every integrator, VAR, reseller, dealer, or whatever you're calling yourself this week, needs to know this. Microsoft discontinues the sales of Windows XP effective Mon., June 30. That means there's only two weeks left.
