  • To protect and serve is not just a slogan for police cars

    Posted February 23, 2007 - 1:59 pm

I'm on a rant. One with channel implications. Customer service, or rather the lack thereof, has me all worked up. And I'm getting angrier by the keystroke. We've been in the midst of getting support for some products and services here in the lab. While I could call the vendor's public-relations department and have them put me through to tech support, I do so only rarely. It's simply not a representation of the real world.
  • Too often, the barbarians are not left at the gate, they're invited in

    Posted January 3, 2007 - 8:18 pm

Windows Vista. It hasn't even hit the streets yet, and the first hack is already upon us. Corporations, already reluctant to roll out any operating system upgrade until at least the first service pack is available, are no doubt becoming even more skittish. That's not a good way to start a new year. The flaw, which is being downplayed by Microsoft, is known as a "privilege escalation attack." Simply put the flaw allows an intrepid hacker to increase users' privileges on Windows 2000 SP4, Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows XP SP1, Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista.
  • Microsoft, Novell fall in love. Will integrators join the celebration

    Posted November 8, 2006 - 7:32 pm

Just weeks after the passing of one-time Novell CEO Ray Noorda -- a Microsoft hater if there ever was one, the two companies have publicly announced their love for each other. You've got to admit, the sight of Steve Ballmer shaking hands with recently appointed Novell CEO Ron Hovsepian was a bit strange.
  • System migration may be the most dangerous thing you ever do

    Posted September 27, 2006 - 11:34 am

Pity the poor IT department that is about to migrate a key application from one platform to another. Or perform a major upgrade. Or worse, merge into another company's systems after being acquired. It's a recipe for disaster. Consider the plight of Mailbank.com, the Boulder, Colo.-based provider of e-mail and Web services under the name NetIdentity. Acquired recently by Toronto-based Tucows, the companies are moving, migrating, and otherwise homogenizing millions of e-mail accounts, including one of mine.
  • Dell's battery recall is its fifth in six years, and Dell is not alone

    Posted August 15, 2006 - 5:48 pm

This week, it seems everyone is piling on Dell, taking it to task for recalling 1.4 million laptop batteries. Well, I will, too: Dell has pulled this stunt before. Not once. Not twice. But five other times in the last six years. Is anybody in charge?
  • Acer's 20-inch Notebook Offers Integrators a Unique Opportunity

    Posted August 2, 2006 - 1:31 pm

It's not often that I write a column about a single hardware product, but Acer's new laptop PC is like no other computer. So here I go. On July 31, Acer's Aspire 9800 high-definition notebook became available in the United States. And to quote from the company's press release, "Aspire 9800 notebooks are available through Acer authorized resellers and retailers throughout North America with prices starting at $2,799."
  • As Bill moves on, expect little to change for partners and integrators

    Posted June 21, 2006 - 8:17 am

It's not likely that Microsoft's channel and partner programs will change in any substantial way as Bill turns to efforts philanthropic. He is, after all, mostly a technology guy, less of a sales guy. That's why from the company's earliest days, Bill brought in an outsider to run the business side.
  • These friends are neither Romans nor countrymen; shall I lend them an ear or my wallet?

Spam continues to create new opportunities for solutions integrators.
  • "Micro-Integrator" Strategy Can Develop Lucrative Results

    Posted February 14, 2006 - 11:54 am

A network integrator by day, and a professional wedding photographer by night. This small systems integrator unites two passions, and carves out a niche business as an expert in color management, color calibration, high-end fine-art inkjet printers that use archival pigmented inks, and more. He has evolved into an integrator to whom commercial and fine-art photographers can turn. This may not be the next step for the typical systems integrator, but if nothing else, we hope it gets your imaginative juices flowing.
  • Consumer Electronics Show is not just for consumers

    Posted January 4, 2006 - 11:05 am

nology shows, but true to varying degrees across hundreds of industries. Several factors have conspired to make this so. Following the Great Internet Bubble Burst of 2000, many IT budgets and staffs suddenly got a whole lot smaller. One line item that usually got slashed was travel. We're all keenly aware of what happened to air travel in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.
  • Customer Case Studies And Success Stories Start At Home

    Posted October 26, 2005 - 9:37 am

One of the services we provide to clients is the crafting of case studies, those glowing 1,200-word essays that shine a spotlight on a customer of the client's products or services. And it made me wonder. Do you shine a spotlight on yourself?
  • Microsoft Launches New Competencies and Partner Resources

    Posted August 4, 2005 - 9:28 am

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer had lots of interesting things to say at the recent Worldwide Partner Conference in Minneapolis. Regarding the people who sell Microsoft products, Steve says thank you and sends his love. "We make 97, 98 percent of our revenue with partners, through partners -- whether it's reselling, partner service, partner training, ISV partners -- partners, partners, partners," Ballmer said to the gathered minions with his typical high-octane delivery. "We are not in the customer services business. We are not in the reselling business. We respect our partnerships. We value our partnerships. We need our partnerships."
  • IP SAN vendor Intransa licenses management software

    Posted July 7, 2005 - 9:52 am

Intransa Inc., a vendor of equipment for Internet Protocol-based storage area networks (IP SANs), has decided to license its management software to third parties, according to an Intransa executive.
  • Jury verdict is good news for providers of storage solutions

    Posted July 6, 2005 - 11:30 am

Storage vendors agree that big changes are coming. I recently moderated a panel at the C3 Expo show in New York about storage trends; officials from EMC, Storability, and Clover Communications each provided their insight.
  • Regain Corporate Control of Handheld Devices with Remote Management

    Posted May 20, 2005 - 10:43 am

Consider some of the custom wireless Palm OS applications that major corporations rely on. In the automotive world, BFGoodrich collects realtime data on tire performance during auto races. BMW dealers can access lease and credit data as they walk the lot with a potential customer. Volvo quality inspectors examine new cars and can report problems. In healthcare, physicians at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center use handhelds for instant access to clinical information, including lab test results and surgical reports. At Miami Children's Hospital, physicians and nurses track post-operative management of pediatric cardiac patients. In manufacturing, Caterpillar uses an application that interfaces directly with Caterpillar engines, providing realtime diagnostic information. Through the U.S. Navy's Handhelds at Sea initiative, Palm handhelds capture critical data on the flight decks of the carriers USS Constellation and USS Abraham Lincoln. And at Pepsi Cola Buffalo Bottling, sales reps enter orders and track inventory.
  • German, yes, but CeBIT has its eyes set on America's Integrators

    Posted March 16, 2005 - 12:02 pm

I'm just back from a week-long trip to CeBIT, the world's largest trade show. Spanning 27 exhibition halls and running for seven days, its 6,300 exhibiting companies represented 69 different countries. If you think this is a German trade for the German market only, think again.
  • As PC Shipments Rise, Opportunities Must Shift

    Posted January 19, 2005 - 4:45 pm

No doubt you've read the reports over the last couple of days that worldwide shipments of personal computers in 2004 grew 11.8 percent to 189 million units, according to market research firm Gartner. IDC, the other big research firm, had an even rosier report, saying that worldwide shipments of personal computers grew 13.7 percent in the fourth quarter. Gartner attributed the growth to strong sales of mobile PCs; IDC to strong demand from small- and medium-sized businesses, and holiday shoppers.
  • Readers Respond To Novell's Move To Sue Microsoft

    Posted November 22, 2004 - 12:35 pm

If the goal of an opinion column is to stir the pot, I'd say we've succeeded. Lots of you responded to the column two weeks ago about Novell's laughable and inept stewardship of the WordPerfect brand and its preposterous attempt to shift the blame to Microsoft by filing yet another antitrust lawsuit.
