Two hackers have released a Palm webOS patch that gives Palm Pre phones a big performance boost. But some users have reported a range of problems; and Palm warns that using it is likely to void your warranty.

Palm and Google are gearing up to confront Apple's iPhone and make creating new applications easier.

Palm Pre owners should go update their phone, as webOS 1.2 is now available for download. This comes on the heels of a slew of leaks and, of course, an iTunes update that broke the Pre's ability to sync with Apple's software.

This week Amazon undercut Sprint's price for the Palm Pre by offering the smartphone for $100 with a two-year contract. Now the online superstore has been outdone after Wal-Mart rolled back the Pre's price to $79.99. (Thanks, Engadget.)

Verizon has reportedly ditched plans to offer the Palm Pre early next year. Poor sales at Sprint -- the Pre's exclusive U.S. carrier -- as well as interest in handsets from Research in Motion and Motorola contributed to the decision, according to The Street, which cities "people close to the discussions."

Palm's attempts to wiggle its way into the iTunes ecosphere by dressing up the Palm Pre smartphone like an iPod may have backfired, landing them in hot water with the group in charge of the USB standard.

A leading financial analyst says sales of Palm's Pre smart phone are "not off to the races" and predicts quarterly sales sharply will decline. The company, meanwhile, announced it will no longer develop for Windows Mobile.

Bad news, Palm Pre owners: it looks like Apple has broken the Pre's iTunes syncing ability once again. On Wednesday Apple released the latest version of its media software, iTunes 9, which includes social networking features, a new iTunes Store interface, and, apparently, a way to break the Pre's syncing capability.
