    Dream screens: eye-catching 24-Inch monitors

    Posted May 26, 2012 - 7:30 am

Laptops and tablets seem to get most of the attention these days--after all, they're great for working on the run. But once you settle down at your desk, it's nice to stretch out with the generous real estate that only a widescreen monitor can provide. And now is the perfect time to buy a monitor: They're cheaper, thinner, and less power-hungry than ever before.

    Samsung ML-2165W: simple, cheap, compact

    Posted May 26, 2012 - 7:10 am

The elegantly simple Samsung ML-2165W monochrome laser printer gives you laser-sharp text for only $150. It's also quite compact, measuring a mere 13 inches wide by 8.5 inches deep by 7 inches high, so it's suitable for small work areas. Extra features are scant, and toner is pricey at about 4 cents per page; but for low-volume, basic printing, it's worth a look.

Samsung Series 9: ultra-thin, but hard to use

    Posted May 5, 2012 - 7:30 am

Razor-thin laptops are nothing new, thanks to the influx of Ultrabooks in the market. But Samsung's latest Series 9 laptop isn't quite an Ultrabook--it's better. The 2012 Series 9, which comes in two flavors (13.3-inch and 15-inch) is thinner, more powerful, and simpler than both its predecessor and the average Ultrabook.

The new Galaxy Tab 2 (7.0) tablet is a good tablet at an excellent price, but how much better is it than Samsung's previous models?

Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G: Slick, speedy phone suffers from bloatware

    Posted March 24, 2012 - 7:58 am

In a world where smartphone displays are getting more and more gargantuan, the 3.97-inch display on the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G is refreshingly compact. Not everybody needs a 5.3-inch display on their phone (Galaxy Note, I'm looking at you!), and it's nice to see a more pocketable phone for those consumers. In addition, the Galaxy S Blaze 4G ($150 with a two-year contract on T-Mobile; price as of March 20, 2012) has fast data speeds (thanks to T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 network) and smooth performance powered by a dual-core processor. But regrettably, the phone is riddled with carrier and manufacturer bloatware that you can't easily remove.

Maybe it's just ahead of its time, or maybe the world will never want a laptop that does little more than run a browser.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 set to stand out

    Posted February 14, 2011 - 2:25 pm

It has only recently been formally introduced, but the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was almost a foregone conclusion. Even as more manageable 7-inch tablets have made headlines in the past months, including the first Galaxy Tab, manufacturers have had Apple's iPad in their sights. And to compete toe-to-toe with the 9.7-inch iPad, it was only a matter of when -- not if -- we'd see a flood of 10-inch class tablets. So many so that it's starting to get hard to tell them apart.

A few nice capabilities don't overcome an ill-conceived 'tweener' tablet with an ill-fitting Android OS.

Phone fans had been hoping that Sprint's next-gen version of the Samsung Instinct smartphone would drop weight and beef up on specs. Then, at CTIA 2009, the Instinct S30 (US$130 after rebates, with a two-year contract) premiered. Let's just say that the new version underwhelms.

    Samsung LN55A950 55-Inch HDTV

    Posted April 20, 2009 - 4:48 pm

The Samsung LN55A950 is the first LCD TV we've tested with LED backlighting. But LED backlighting doesn't come cheap. The LN55A950's $4500 street price (as of April 16, 2009) puts it in a different league from the other TVs that PC World normally reviews, but the image quality--though good--does not.
