The best freeware for small businesses

    Posted June 24, 2012 - 7:43 am

For too many people, the phrase "free software" conjures up images of pirated brand-name applications or poorly supported third-class programs. If that's what you think of freeware, you're missing an opportunity to save your business a lot of cash.

Create PDFs for free with PrimoPDF

    Posted August 29, 2011 - 9:57 am

PrimoPDF (free) is a printer driver that creates PDF files from your documents, rather than printing them to paper. After install, whenever you choose the print option from an application, PrimoPDF will be listed along with your physical printers, print to file, etc. It's extremely easy to use and produces excellent PDFs--without the watermarks that some programs add.

Still awesome after all these years: 8 excellent free downloads

    Posted July 23, 2011 - 8:56 am

Wine gets better with age. Men get more distinguished looking (or so my wife tells me). Even some cars seem to improve as time passes (I'm looking at you, 1965 Mustang). But there's nothing glamorous about old software apps, which just get less and less useful the older they get--right?

Review: Open source FreeOTFE encrypts disks handily

    Posted March 8, 2011 - 4:02 pm

FreeOTFE may sound like a political bumper sticker, but it stands for "Free On The Fly Encryption." The "Free" part is self-explanatory; "On The Fly Encryption" refers to the encrypting/decrypting of data as it is written to or read from your hard disk. The data on your disk (either the whole disk or a portion of it, as you see fit) is stored in an encrypted form, and FreeOTFE handles all read and write requests, so that the operating system, applications, etc, operate normally. Despite what you might expect, speed impact is generally minimal and will probably not be noticed by a user under most circumstances.
