This is a great time to buy an HDTV. Televisions in 2011 have taken 2010's hot trends -- 3D, Internet apps, and LED lighting technology for LCD sets -- and made them better and cheaper.

HDTV Shopping tips: 3D, 1080p, and more

    Posted March 30, 2011 - 1:00 pm

Buying an HDTV can be a daunting task. Unlike a smartphone, which typically sells for a few hundred dollars, an HDTV is a major investment that could last you for several years. For that reason, many consumers spend a lot amount of time poring over reviews, measuring sets to ensure that they'll fit the available wall space, and trying to find the best television in their price range. But other, more-technical questions are also relevant.

    HDTVs: Best Places to Buy

    Posted May 24, 2010 - 10:50 am

Since a large HDTV is one of the bulkiest and most expensive electronics purchases you can make, you'll want to make the right choice from the get-go. Prices online tend to be lower than those at brick-and-mortar stores, but we did find some attractive in-store deals as well.

    Insignia NS-LCD52HD-09 52-Inch HDTV

    Posted April 20, 2009 - 4:52 pm

The Insignia NS-LCD52HD-09 costs only about $1400 (as of March 10, 2009), a very good price for a 52-inch HDTV. And though its image quality isn't great, it's not horrible, either. The NS-LCD52HD-09 has only middling sound quality, too, but again it's about what you would expect for the comparatively low price.

    Panasonic TH-50PZ850U 50-Inch HDTV

    Posted April 20, 2009 - 4:50 pm

The Panasonic TH-50PZ850U is a pretty good value, especially in view of its generous array of extra features. Not only can it display your pictures and run your videos off its SD card slot, but you can plug it into an ethernet connection and enjoy Internet video. This set also does an adequate, though not extraordinary, job displaying movies and TV shows. And at US$1700 street (as of April 16, 2009), this plasma HDTV is reasonably inexpensive for a 50-inch set.

    Samsung LN55A950 55-Inch HDTV

    Posted April 20, 2009 - 4:48 pm

The Samsung LN55A950 is the first LCD TV we've tested with LED backlighting. But LED backlighting doesn't come cheap. The LN55A950's $4500 street price (as of April 16, 2009) puts it in a different league from the other TVs that PC World normally reviews, but the image quality--though good--does not.

    Vizio VF550XVT 55-Inch HDTV

    Posted April 20, 2009 - 4:47 pm

The Vizio VF550XVT 55-inch HDTV isn't much of a bargain, despite the reasonable $1800 price tag (as of April 16, 2009). Assorted problems with image quality, weak sound, and clumsy menus, along with a lack of interesting features, make this set difficult to recommend.
