Lion DiskMaker makes it easier to create a bootable Lion installer

    Posted May 10, 2012 - 7:35 am

I’ve written quite a bit about installing Lion (OS X 10.7) and about the benefits of creating a bootable installer disc or drive. While the latter process isn’t prohibitively difficult, it’s still a bit of a hassle. Developer Guillaume Gète has made it a bit easier with Lion DiskMaker, an AppleScript-based utility that mostly automates the procedure.

Review: Maca 2200 and Maca Air battery cases for iPhone 4 and 4S

    Posted May 10, 2012 - 7:30 am

MiPow offers a pair of battery cases for the iPhone 4 and 4S--the $79 Maca Air and the $79 Maca 2200 Color Power Case. The two cases are very similar: Each sports a transparent top cover and edging--in fact, the top plastic caps are interchangeable between the two models. Each case ships with two such caps, so you have a backup in case you lose one. The back of each case is anodized metal that reflects trippy patterns in light, and multiple colors are available.

Tablet face-off: budget models from Acer and Asus vs. Apple’s iPad 2

    Posted May 5, 2012 - 7:55 am

It appears that $400 or less marks the new sweet spot for 10-inch class tablets. First Apple reduced its iPad 2 to that price, and now we have a pair of Android tablets, the Acer Iconia Tab A200 and the Asus Transformer Pad 300, coming in at $350 and $380, respectively. If you have four bills and want a 10-inch tablet, which of these represents the better deal? The answer may surprise you.

Hands on with Apple TV software update 5.0

    Posted March 11, 2012 - 8:45 am

On Wednesday, Apple introduced a new version--the third generation--of its Apple TV media player, adding support for 1080p video and debuting a major update to the device's user interface with a number of new software features. But just as welcome to many Apple TV fans was the announcement that all of the software improvements in the new model are also available immediately to the previous model via Apple TV Software Update 5.0. Which means that if you have a second-generation Apple TV, even though you won't be able play 1080p video, you'll gain the rest of the new features of the latest model without spending a cent. (Your Apple TV should notify you that the update is

    Review: iBooks 2 for iOS

If iBooks were two apps, I'd give the one for reading regular books a higher rating, and the optimized experience a still favorable-though-slightly qualified recommendation.

    iPhone 4S review: It's a sure thing

    Posted October 12, 2011 - 10:17 am

The iPhone 4S is more of a good thing: It takes the successful look of the iPhone 4 and tosses in a dual-core processor for dramatically improved speed, an upgraded camera, and some brand-new voice-command technologies.

iOS 5 review: Ambitious update rings in the changes

    Posted October 12, 2011 - 10:08 am

It seems like every time a major software revision comes along, it’s described as the “biggest ever.” In the case of iOS 5, though, that might not be hyperbole—there’s hardly a part of Apple’s mobile operating system that isn’t altered in some way by the latest update.

Windows 8 and OSX Lion: How do they compare?

    Posted September 17, 2011 - 9:06 am

It's still far too early in Windows 8's development cycle to pit the nascent OS against its fully-baked competition. But Apple's recently released OSX Lion offers up the most recent, competing view of what a PC operating system should look like in the age of the smartphone and tablet.

When Apple released new iMacs in early May, the company also made available new build-to-order (BTO) options in addition to the standard-configuration models. Macworld Lab tested two iMacs with BTO processor upgrades that offer faster speeds and more processing power, and the results show that the additional cost for the upgrades are worth it--if you run software that takes advantage of the technology.

Thin, light and sleek, the iPad 2 still has some caveats (like subpar cameras), the reviewers point out, but that doesn't mean the new tablet can't make a splash.
