  • Since you already have a “Cloud Ready” printer, there isn’t too much more you will have to do. She is going to need two things for her iPhone and iPad - the Chrome browser and the PrintCentral Pro app (there are two versions on iTunes, one for iPhone and one for iPad, so make sure she gets both).

  • Microsoft has announced that Windows 7 will enter Extended Support status in January 2015. How will this affect Windows 7 users? Will there be any changes as to the frequency of patches and updates?

  • While I still hear complaints about Android fragmentation from time to time, it seems as if those complaints are much less common than they used to be. Am I just going deaf, or is fragmentation not as much of an issue as it used to be? If it isn’t, what’s changed?

  • I have a few videos up on YouTube that have tens of thousands of hits. I’m not greedy or anything, but I figure if anyone is going to make money off of my videos, I should get a piece of the pie. What do I need to do to become a YouTube Partner and monetize my videos?

  • Windows 8 uses something called “SuperFetch” and “ReadyBoost” to monitor your usage patterns and pre-fetch data that you are likely to use into memory. Thus, it increases performance because Windows doesn’t have to retrieve the data from your hard drive when it is needed.

  • We have a number of HP printers that suddenly started displaying the message “Vote for Josh.” It is on our network, could someone have taken advantage of this to “hack” the display message. We don’t have a Josh at my office, by the way, so there are no obvious suspects.

  • This is pretty easy on a Mac. First of all, launch preview (finder>applications>preview) and open the pdf file. Second, if thumbnails are visible, just click the thumbnail of the pdf you want to merge and drag it to the thumbnail of the pdf you want to merge it with and it will automatically be added to the end of the destination pdf.

  • It seems that everyone and their brother has at some point decided to enter their own pony in the smartphone horserace - Ubuntu, Firefox, Samsung/Tizen, etc. - and most have met with limited success.

  • I would not expect to see much impact. Compared to earlier changes where they split DVD and streaming, the price increase will be modest. Also, according to the press reports that I’ve read, the company will grandfather existing customers at the current rate, at least for some period of time.

  • Last week the CEO of Mozilla resigned after it was revealed that he donated $1000 to support Proposition 8, the California anti-gay rights ballot initiative that passed a couple of years ago. Now, there are calls to boycott Dropbox because former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has joined the board of directors.

  • Some new routers tout their inclusion of “beamforming.” How much does this really improve the range of a wireless router? Is it just a catchy tagline (“Blast processing!!!) or is it worth paying a premium for?

  • I know this is not the answer that you want, but It may or may not work fine. Ideally you should upgrade in matched pairs; with different sizes and (potentially) manufacturers, there is a chance it could cause stability issues. Common things I’ve seen happen are just getting stuck on a boot screen or BSOD.

  • My laptop has started making progressively more noise. I’m almost certain that it is the fan. Is there anything that can be done to fix it, or will I have to replace the fan?

  •  It’s built into Windows 98. Go to START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>DISK CONVERTER. Follow the on-screen instructions at that point, and you should be fine, although you might run into some issues if the drive is already compressed.

  • There is a different pricing structure, but functionally there isn't a lot of difference. In a recent pcworld article, they compared it to a rent vs.

  • Money would be one big thing. Keep in mind, at many companies the people controlling the purse strings aren’t really tech oriented. So if it still works, why spend money on an “unnecessary” upgrade? They aren’t really aware of the security implications. That’s what IT is there for, in their book.

  • Two companies have been announced: BQ, a Spanish manufacturer, and Meizi, a Chinese manufacturer. I know very little about either company. As far as I know, neither has ever offered their hardware for sale in the US. I could be wrong about that, but I’ve never seen anything to suggest otherwise.

  • That’s definitely odd, but don’t jump to conclusions just yet. Are you using a messaging app like Whatsapp or LINE? Sometimes things just go wrong with them, but not very often. If you are using the native SMS service, with most carriers you can go online and check your message history.

  • If I understand your post correctly, one option would be to learn more about software engineering through self-study.

  • To get the talent, primarily, like Google did with Bitspin recently. Sometimes it's to fill a gap in its offerings or to prevent another company from becoming a legitimate competitor or offering a product that is direct competition for the acquiring company’s offerings.

  • A new California law went into effect January 1, 2014 that governs how websites deal with online privacy. If I’m not based in California, does my website still have to comply with it?

  • It can make it easier for people to find your work when using Google search, for one. It also help improve content credibility through improved Author Rank. The Huffington Post, of all places, has a decent summary and guide.

  • She could go straight to the source and check out Google's guide, written by Eric Schmidt. It isn't exactly unbiased, but it gives a good concise guide that hits on the major points. I'm unable to post the link to it, but if you search for "Eric Schmidt's Eric's Guide: Converting to Android" you should find it.

  •  It means apps will run and html can be used. In essence, webOS can be used to create a smart TV that is more like a tablet than other current TVs, albeit with a different (non-touchscreen) UI.

  • Consumer Reports did a huge survey a couple of years ago, I think it was tens of thousands of owners surveyed. I recall that Asus did well, as did Toshiba. However, a Soluto report that used remote support app data from 150K+ laptops over a 3 month period shows an Acer E1-571 at number 2 (behind a MacBook Pro).
