  • You need your serial number. You can get this by going to the Apple Menu, then selecting “About this Mac.” Once you have the About this Mac window open, click on the part where it has the Version X.X and your MacBook’s serial number should replace the version number.

  • That's a surprisingly complex question to answer. If you want a thorough understanding, I’d suggest that you start with this video from Microsoft Learning Experiences. It’s about 45 minutes long, and there are 3 more (I think) in this series if you want to go even more in depth.

  • It might be failing, but there is a known issue on some Crucial M4s called the 5200 hour bug. It sounds like your SSD might be old enough to have the problem. There is a firmware patch that might fix your problem.

  • I think the problem may be that “account activity” only shows when you have logged into your account, not individual products such as Gmail or YouTube. So, for example, when your phone syncs with Gmail to check for new messages, that’s not going to show up in your account activity.

  • Basically, the higher the number, the greater the level of redundancy and compartmentalization. There is a nice, plain English summary at   Tier 1 - Non-redundant capacity components (single uplink and servers). Tier 2 - Tier 1 + Redundant capacity components.

  • Check with the manufacturer of whatever capture device you are connecting to with that Cat5 cable. Some video over USB products utilize isochronous USB data transfer and need a non-Cat5 USB extender.

  • You still have time, but you better hurry. Registration opened yesterday, April 15, and ends April 18 at 2:00 p.m. Pacific time. Cost is $900 per person and you have to use Google+ and Google Wallet to sign up, which is probably not an issue if you are interested in Google I/O.

  • Beamforming is becoming more and more common with 802.11ac equipment, and has some measurable benefits. Some 802.11n routers implemented a version of beamforming called implicit beamforming, with mixed results.

  • You friend should be able to participate using UberConference, which has added Google Hangouts integration. Of course, this means he will need to set up an UberConference account, so if he also doesn’t trust them, he may just have to start writing you all letters.

  • You can read documents without the subscription, but to edit them you are going to have to pony up for Office 365. Seems a little expensive, but at least you have the option of Office on the iPad now.

  • The hardest part will be getting to it, and whether you fix it or replace it you are going to have to do some disassembly. The two main possibilities are (1) some debris is stuck in the fan, or (2) the bearings are shot. I guess you could just give it a blast with canned air and hope it blows out some debris, but it probably won’t do the trick.

  • It’s been a while since I’ve used Dreamweaver, so maybe it has changed, but while Dreamweaver can convert AP Divs to tables and vice versa it did not work very well and I don’t recommend it. If you want to try it, the option should be under the MODIFY>CONVERT menu.

  • You really need to update your OS, assuming your hardware will support a newer version of OS X. I suppose if you aren’t online with that Mac and just use it for things like word processing or as a music server you would be ok.

  • You could also try Office Web Apps, which is the online version of Office. I don’t see any reason that it wouldn’t work on a Chromebook, although I've never tried it with the Chrome browser.

  • The way I understand it, if people from California are accessing your website and you collect any information, it could apply to you. It’s not that big of a deal to comply with, it is like the privacy notifications on European websites, except you also have to disclose whether your site honors “Do Not Track” requests.
