Microsoft shows virtual hand gestures without gloves

Digits project enables 3D computer interaction with a wrist-worn sensor

By

Microsoft's Research division has posted a new video of its Digits project, "a wrist-worn gloveless sensor" that "enables 3-D computer interaction in any environment and is practical beyond computer gaming.

As seen in the following video, a virtual hand on screen can mimic the actions and movements of the physical hand. While this was accomplished before with gloves, this shows that a camera on the wrist can now achieve the same thing.

While this would be used for gaming applications, other uses for this include mobile device interaction and 3D interaction within a virtual environment. We're getting closer to the gesture control options seen in movies like "Minority Report" and "Iron Man" (and "Iron Man 2" and "The Avengers"). Yay Hollywood!
