Fistfights are breaking out all over the Apple arena. The iPhone can no longer ignore the hard-charging Droid. AT&T might lose a chunk of its customer base if a Verizon iPhone comes to light. Early signs show the iPad rattling the fast-cooling netbook market.

  • Apple announces the 2010 WWDC

    Posted April 28, 2010 - 8:47 pm

Today, Apple announced the dates for the 2010 Worldwide Developers Conference, June 7-11 2010. My experience in the Mac universe tells me that no matter what Apple announced in the way of content, there would be a large amount of worrying and hand-wringing about it. That same experience told me very little of said worry would be based in logic. I was not wrong.

  • New MacBook Pro Can Boot From an SD Card

    Posted June 12, 2009 - 2:03 pm

In the wake of this week's WWDC keynote, in which Apple announced that new MacBook Pro laptops will finally include an SD card, the tech press is all aflutter about what they seem to think is a new possibility: booting from SD. Sorry to break it to you all, but this isn't a new idea, and many PCs have been doing it for years.
  • Four Reasons Why iPhone Owners Hate AT&T

    Posted June 10, 2009 - 3:04 pm

With the iPhone 3G S news now in the wild, the discussion digressed from the announcement of the 3G S itself to AT&T, the iPhone's exclusive carrier in the U.S. (at the moment). Without a doubt, this relationship is where Apple's weaknesses lie.
  • Apple to AT&T: Drop Dead

    Posted June 10, 2009 - 3:01 pm

In nearly 30 years of covering technology, I've never seen the kind of snub Apple handed to AT&T during its iPhone 3GS announcement at the WWDC keynote. Apple did everything possible, short of an on-stage denunciation, to picture its iPhone launch partner as what the carrier's customers have long considered it to be: Slow and backward.
  • What do Snow Leopard, iPhone 3G S & its OS mean for business?

    Posted June 10, 2009 - 1:44 pm

Even though the keynote had a distinct focus on consumer and end-user technologies, there were announcements at WWDC that business execs and IT pros shouldn't overlook. They say a lot about Apple's future in the business world.
  • Attack of the Apple 'Fans'

    Posted June 10, 2009 - 11:11 am

Apple's keynote address from its Worldwide Developers Conference may be over, but the dust surrounding the event has not yet settled. Overall, many fans were happy to see what Apple announced during the speech, but there were also howls of derision directed at AT&T, and sometimes even Apple. Here's a breakdown of the reactions:
  • iPhone 3G S? Let's talk about Snow Leopard instead

    Posted June 10, 2009 - 11:07 am

I'm a bit befuddled by some of reactions I've heard to Monday's keynote presentation at Apple's Worldwide Developers' Conference (WWDC) here at Moscone West. There was a lot of "mehs" and even more, "Where's the big news?" Okay, so CEO Steve Jobs was still on medical leave, leaving the headlining to an untucked Phil Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of marketing and long-time Jobs foil. But there was a pretty good info download on the upcoming Snow Leopard operating system alone to keep me interested.
  • Will TomTom iPhone App Mean the End of One-Function Devices

    Posted June 10, 2009 - 11:06 am

TomTom's turn-by-turn direction iPhone application, which was unveiled at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference Monday, has been met with much enthusiasm. The new application delivers TomTom's turn-by-turn directions straight to the iPhone. It features everything you'd expect from TomTom including voice- and map-guided directions and your best route options based on the time of day.
  • WWDC: No Steve Jobs, But Who Noticed?

    Posted June 10, 2009 - 11:03 am

Apple has yet to prove that it can prosper in a post-Steve Jobs world, but this week's Worldwide Developer Conference brought the company closer to that goal. With Jobs seemingly poised to soon return from medical leave, the company he co-founded looks better positioned to live without him, when that time eventually comes.
  • WWDC: The Day After

    Posted June 10, 2009 - 10:56 am

The WWDC keynote is behind us, and you know what that means: scores of bloggers and tech analysts playing Tuesday Morning Pundit. To simplify things, I've decided to grade yesterday's announcements using one of today's most popular Internet memes--EPIC WIN, WIN, FAIL, and EPIC FAIL. It should be fairly self-evident how this scale works. Enough with the formalities; let's dig in.
  • Apple's WWDC: 10 Things We Wanted But Didn't Get

    Posted June 10, 2009 - 9:28 am

While the iPhone and its accompanying iPhone 3.0 OS provide plenty of added features, a lot of other Apple elements -- both iPhone-related and otherwise -- failed to come to fruition on Monday. Here are 10 things we wanted but didn't get from Apple's WWDC.

The news that Apple would be selling its fancy new iPhone 3G S for the same prices as the iPhone 3G was greeted by applause at Monday morning's WWDC keynote. But, as interested customers soon discovered, those prices aren't necessarily the same for all customers.
