Meet NASA's 8 new astronauts (including 4 women)

Group selected from more than 6,300 eager applicants

NASA has selected eight people from more than 6,300 applicants to train as astronauts, the space agency announced on Monday.

The eight astronaut trainees come from more than 6,100 applicants, the second-highest number of people seeking to join the space agency's program ever, according to NASA.

And this group includes four women, which is noteworthy because of the 534 people who have flown in space, only 57 have been women. That's 10.7%, folks.

Not that there's a guarantee any of these eight astronaut trainees will eventually go on a space mission, be it to an asteroid, Mars or elsewhere. But it's one giant leap closer, to paraphrase a former holder of the job to which they all aspire.

There's a video below of NASA chief Charles Bolden welcoming the astronauts and talking about the program's future plans. It doesn't mention the eight astronauts by name, so here are some details about them below:

Josh A. Cassada, Ph. D., 39, is a physicist and co-founder and Chief Technology Officer for Quantum Opus.

Victor J. Glover, 37, Lt. Commander, U.S. Navy, is an F/A-18 pilot. He currently is a Navy Legislative Fellow in the U.S. Congress.

Tyler N. Hague (Nick), 37, Lt. Colonel, U.S. Air Force, currently is deputy chief of the Joint Improvised Explosive Device Defeat Organization.

Christina M. Hammock, 34, currently is serving as National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Station chief in American Samoa.

Nicole Aunapu Mann, 35, Major, U.S. Marine Corps, is an F/A 18 pilot currently serving as an Integrated Product Team lead at the U.S. Naval Air Station, Patuxent River.

Anne C. McClain, 34, Major, U.S. Army, is an OH-58 helicopter pilot and a recent graduate of U.S. Naval Test Pilot School at Naval Air Station, Patuxent River.

Jessica U. Meir, Ph.D., 35, is an assistant professor of anesthesia at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.

Andrew R. Morgan, M.D., 37, Major, U.S. Army, has experience as an emergency physician and flight surgeon for the Army special operations community, and currently is completing a sports medicine fellowship.
