Latest iPhone release rumors: September! No, October!

Some sources say one month, some say another. What drama!

The debut of Apple's next-gen iPhone continues to be surrounded by mystery and drama.

According to the latest rumors, the iPhone 5 will be released in September. Or in October.

First rumor up, from Gizmodo:

An AT&T employee says that any vacations for the last two weeks of September would be denied "due to an event blackout". According to him, the only times this has been done in the past was when an iPhone was released.

That sounds solid! An "insider" with the ability to notice trends! I think we can book September for the iPhone 5.

Not so fast, says another anonymous source, this one speaking to All Things Digital:

"I don’t know why AT&T’s calling for all hands on deck those weeks, but it’s not for an iPhone launch," a source familiar with Apple’s plans said.

Instead, the source tells ATD, the iPhone 5 will be unveiled in October, though apparently "other sources" say it will be toward the end of the month.

Typically Apple has released versions of the iPhone in June or July of any particular year, so the delays and confusion surrounding the iPhone 5 are uncharacteristic. Indeed, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam said last week during the company's quarterly earnings call that Verizon "had assumed that we would see an iPhone early in the summertime as it’s been usually, and that’s going to be a little bit later in the year now."

Or maybe none of Gizmodo's or ATD's vaunted anonymous "sources" knows what they're talking about. Maybe this Gizmodo commenter is accurate:

None of this is true. I have a close friend that works at Apple; the new macbook pro and iPhone 5 will be out in January. This is a fact straight from the source.

Apple better hope the iPhone 5 release isn't pushed beyond the holiday shopping season. That would be very un-Apple like.

As for the new phone's features, it's expected to have a dual-core A5 processor -- the same processor used for the iPad 2 -- and a new 8 megapixel rear camera.
