7 ways digital transformation can help your career

The effect that Digital Transformation (DX), cloud computing and mobility are having on IT careers, the overall IT function, and the organizations they serve.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Seth Robinson, the Senior Director of Technology Analysis at CompTIA. We discussed their recent research report “Building Digital Organization”. Our discussion centered on the effect that Digital Transformation (DX), cloud computing and mobility is having on the IT function and the organizations they serve.

He went on to say that “DX isn’t only about technology. It’s also a deeper change within the business processes themselves as they are transformed through the use of digital technologies.”

We then discussed how DX, cloud and mobility is also causing IT to evolve. As always, IT should play both a tactical and a strategic role within the company. Tactically, IT must continue to keep the production systems up and running, costs within a reasonable range, move the company’s technological platform forward as necessity requires. Strategically, IT must work with its business partners to pick the best technologies to move the company forward, not only from a technical perspective, but also from a business perspective, causing IT to become more business knowledgeable and business savvy.

Moving forward, because of DX and continued advances in cloud and mobility, it gives IT the opportunity to be a true strategic player within the C-suite, but only if the leaders with IT are willing and able to consider the business first and the available technologies second.

I then asked Seth what advice I could give my ITworld readers related to what knowledege they should gain and skills they should master to compete and professionally thrive within this ever-changing role of IT. He suggested the following:

  1. Understand your company’s business objectives, it will help you select the needed technology products to bring your company forward.
  2. Learn your company’s business processes and the business language they use to describe them.
  3. Enhance your interpersonal communications skills, allowing you to become more business savvy.
  4. Consider the total cost of implementing new technologies, not just the purchase price of the selected solution. This provides great value to the business because they are not knowledgeable about the costs of data security, ongoing production, and other technical requirements.
  5. Keep your core technical skills up to date.
  6. Broaden your technical skills in areas related to your core technical expertise.
  7. Broaden your business skills in the specific areas you are supporting.
